Sunday June 21st is the official start of summer in the northern hemisphere.  This date is called the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere.  Simultaneously the winter solstice is occurring in the Southern Hemisphere. Around December 21 the solstices are reversed and winter begins in the northern hemisphere and summer in the southern.

A solstice is an astronomical event that occurs twice each year, when the tilt of the Earth’s axis is most inclined toward or away from the Sun, causing the Sun’s apparent position in the sky to reach its northernmost or southernmost extreme.

The summer solstice is the longest day of the year, respectively, in the sense that the length of time elapsed between sunrise and sunset on this day is a maximum for the year.
