Election Day

Hurry up and wait. That pretty much sums up Election Day from a reporter’s standpoint. Its weeks and weeks of anticipation and then it is all over in a couple hours.

Tonight we are covering Toledo & Oregon’s primary election. The biggest race is, no doubt, the Toledo mayor’s race. We have worked hard to make sure we can bring out viewers the most complete coverage. Now we just have to wait. Wait until the polls close and wait until we get some results.

This process takes longer for some elections than others. We would hope that since all of Lucas County isn’t involved, the results would come faster. That is not necessarily the case. The Lucas County Board of Elections director has already assured us that we might not have any preliminary results until 9:30pm. That’s two hours after the polls close.

I will be in place at my assigned coverage location by around 7:30pm. I’ll just watch and wait. Tonight it happens to be at the party of democratic mayoral candidate, Keith Wilkowski. We will have other reporters posted with other candidates. Shaun and Laura will be back at the studio to deliver results. And we will have a whole slew of staff working behind the scene. (Even the boss stays late tonight.)

So, you see, it is a lot of hurry up and wait. I wish there was a magic solution that would allow us to bring you results sooner, but there is not. We are at the mercy of the system, and technology.

No you know a little about how Election Day works in the TV news world.
