My World Series Novel
Since it is almost Game 6 of the World Series between the Philadelphia Phillies and the New York Yankees, I think it is appropriate for me to say a few things. First of all, if you have been following me on Twitter, you probably know that I am a Phillies fan, and I’d like to say sorry to anyone I have annoyed with my excessive tweets (especially if you are a Yankees fan). With that, I have to tell you why this Series is so exciting to me.
I guess I should start by explaining why I am such a big Phillies fan. The Phillies have been a part of my life, well, forever. When I was really little I remember watching the games on TV with my Grandpop while he told me stories of all of the different players. When I got a little bit older I went to my first Phillies game in the rain and I’ll never forget the blue ponchos that we wore, the peanuts that we ate, the peanut shells that we had throwing contests with, and my first ice cream in that awesome plastic red hat cup (that I still have).
When I was in junior high school my Dad and Uncle’s company kept getting tickets to a super box in the old Phillies stadium (Veterans Stadium). When I think of the times in that box, I think of the giant cookies that they always served (delicious); I think of the friends that me and my cousins would bring along and the memories that we all have together; I think of us trying to talk to the players in the field and sometimes thinking that maybe they heard us when they turned around; I think of trying so hard every game to get the camera man to notice us so we’d get on the fan cam screen; I think of the first game that my baby brother and baby sister attended with us; I think of using them as excuses to buy unnecessary fan gear and Philly Phanatic stuffed animals; and I think of the 4th of July Fireworks that we’d watch from the field after the game.
When the new stadium was built, I remember at first being sad about the change, but then very quickly falling in love with the new ball park and all of it’s features (especially the giant liberty bell that rings every time they get a home run). I remember getting to sing the national anthem with my high school choir at a game while the Phanatic tried to distract my friends and I to be funny. I think of birthday parties with my friends, I think of waiting out rain delays in hopes that there would be a game, and I think of the wonderful deliciousness that is a Philly Cheesesteak!
Now let me tell you about my feelings toward the New York Yankees (my second favorite team in baseball). Living in New York City for four years while at a college that was not big on sports, I needed a team…and for me that team became the Yankees. The first Yankees game I ever attended was an adventure for my new college friends and I, as it was our first time venturing out to the Bronx on the subway, which was all very new. Looking back on that day is so funny because we were so young and confused about how to get around and it was just a great bonding experience. My sophomore year I took a class called the Social History of Baseball where I learned so much amazingly rich history about the Yankees and New York City, and after that and a tour of the stadium I was pretty much hooked. To top it all off, my first time in the new Yankee Stadium was for my NYU graduation, which was the coolest experience and one of the most incredible memories to have. Plus, let’s be serious, there are so many wonderfully talented guys on that team it’s exciting to like them.
So when I found out that the Phillies were going to be in the World Series for the second year in a row, I was totally routing for them to play the Yankees. I am cheering for the Phillies to win the Series because I am a loyal fan and my heart belongs with them, but it is so cool for me to see them play another team that I care about. If we can beat that team, that would be remarkable. If we could win two World Series in a row, that would be wonderful. We have a chance and we have the talent if we can turn it on. And if not, at least I’ll have some more exciting baseball viewing memories that I will forever associate with living here and having my dream job during what seems to be the best Fall ever!!
