Out with Bivens!!!

Since these blogs can’t truly be considered as journalistic gems, I’m using these to rant and rave, stuff I can’t do on air because journalistically, I’m supposed to stay objective and just state facts.

Let me say this: it’s a good thing that Carolyn Bivens is “stepping down.”

Well, it’s not official yet, but the only reason it’s not, is because the U.S. Women’s Open is going on and obviously, during a major, you don’t want to distract the players, especially with all sorts of money on the line.

Here’s the deal: Bivens has driven the LPGA into the ground in a time when they can’t afford to play hardball.  They want more money from tournaments in an economic time where the tournaments can’t afford to give more money.

The players have made it clear they want her out, and when you have players like Michelle Wie, Paula Creamer, Morgan Pressel, Se Ri Pak, Lorena Ochoa, Cristie Kerr, and Natalie Gulbis (among others) meeting over dinner ON A COMPETITION DAY, you know it’s a big deal.

The neat thing is, Mancie’s will always go down in the history books as the place where the heads came together and came up with the letter with signatures asking for Bivens’ head, I mean, resignation.

The above-mentioned girls are the very girls the tour wants to promote.  They have clout.  I found it interesting that Christina Kim wasn’t invited to this dinner since it’s pretty obvious that she’s a player favorite.  Michelle Wie was frequently cracking jokes with her on the putting greens at Highland Meadows, and Kim is known as one of the most fun-loving chicas on tour.

It’s pretty clear, however, why she wasn’t invited.  However much Kim is loved and respected by her fellow peers, she has said that she doesn’t believe Bivens should be the sole scapegoat of what’s happened on tour: basically, how all the sponsors have ditched the LPGA; tournaments have either died or are in limbo and the tour, as of the moment, has all of about 5 tournaments set for 2010 in the United States.  Oh yeah, they lost a HUGE sponsor (McDonald’s) for one of their majors.

My thought is, the girls knew Kim’s view on the whole deal, and so why bring someone who might not be on board and who might actually get other people to go against the Bivens’ resignation cause?  That’s what I read between the lines, at least.  No matter what, though, Kim is still well-loved.  It’s just that the players knew she wasn’t the soldier to put on the front line in this battle.

So what happens now?  Or actually, maybe as soon as Monday?

Well, rumors are swirling that Nancy Lopez will have a leadership position.  That would do wonders, because Lopez is still the prime ambassador to the game.  She’s loved all over the place.  She’s recognized.  She’ll pump up the publicity.  She just needs a few savvy businesspeople around her, and the LPGA will be all good.  Lopez will make sure the players’ interests will never be forgotten in terms of the bottom line.  At the same time, she will NOT alienate longtime sponsors (such as Owens Corning for the Jamie Farr) who are in love with Nancy.

Just sayin’… if you heard a roar these last few days, well, it could’ve been for Jonathan Sanchez’s no-hitter, but it also could’ve been the sponsors nationwide who were rejoicing as news of Bivens’ resignation became more imminent.

May the Farr live on.
